World Down Syndrome Day 2009 – in Columbia

There will be a fashion show in which 12 of our Down Syndrome models will share lights with 12 professional models. Half of the models will be kids from 8 to 13 years old and for the closing of the show we will have a group of our toddlers walking down the aisle with balloons in their hands. The fashion show will be held in one of the city´s most important shopping malls on Saturday at 5 pm. A famous national tv entertainer will be our host for the evening and we will be selling our ribbon bracelets and some cookies during the event.

The objective of this event is to create awareness in our society, making the point that people with Down Syndrome can do the same things that regular people. It´s all about inclusion and integration in our society.

Fundown Caribe was created about 1 ½ years ago by a group of parents with kids with Down Syndrome and we have registered until now about 400 families in which 86% are very poor families. Our actual programs include besides our orientation lectures given every month, our early stimulation program in which we teach parents and give them the tools to work with their kids at home. Also, we have a workshop, twice a week, in which we teach 20 kids and adults arts and crafts.
