In Moscow the World Down Syndrome Day echoed in a teleconference “Promoting the rights of people with Down syndrome in the modern world” hosted by The Russian News & Information Agency “RIA Novosti” on 22 March 2010.
The event was organized by Russian Charitable Fund “Downside Up” (http://www.en.downsideup.org/) in cooperation with the Foundation for the Support of Children at Risk (http://www.fond-detyam.ru/).
Charitable Fund “Downside Up” is a member of the European Down Syndrome Association (EDSA) and initiator of the World Down Syndrome Day celebration in Russia.
The following issues, reflecting problems that people with Down syndrome face in Russia and abroad, were discussed on this tele-conference:
- Social orphanhood among children with Down syndrome
- Convention on the Rights of the Child
- Early intervention as a basis for successful educational route
- Inclusion into society. Modern approach to creative activities, supported employment and living
In the framework of tele-conference there was live broadcast from “RIA Novosti” London bureau featuring Veronique Garrett, trustee of the Russian Charitable Fund “Downside Up” and Susannah Seyman, information officer of Down’s Syndrome Association.
